Risperdal under SSI

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Our daughter went through an extremely truamatic event as a small child and was diagnosed with PTSD, ODD, sexual rape of a child, along with a list of others. She has had severe problems ranging from anxiety and outbursts to dissociation and everything in between. She was prescribed risperidone (Risperdal) when the doctors couldn't find anything else effective for her. It was working much better than we'd hoped but now Medicaid under SSI will no longer pay for this outrageously expensive medication. They will only grant it for children with autism. Where does this leave children like our daughter and the thousands of others who are prescribed this drug in tandum with their therapy? Thank goodness I'm a nurse and can titrate her down from it. Many parents won't know to do this. It can be potentially damaging to the dopamine levels of the brain when abruptly halted. This issue really needs to be addressed swiftly. This is a serious matter dealing with the lives of children. Please, if anyone has any ideas, recommendations, or alternatives to solving this problem please feel free to chime in. We need help with this little girl.

I was wondering do I qualify for ssi in having bipolar disorder and can not be around people?
