SSI Back Pay Installments

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Does anybody know whether that SSI back pay comes on a certain day of the month? I got my first installment the same week I was approved for SSI it came on the same day I got my first benefit. But I should receive one in January and I'm trying to figure out when I will see it? If anyone has any experience with receiving them in would love to hear about it!

Hi Dwayne,

Unfortunately I cannot say for sure since it varies from case to case. It can be a long process though.

Best of Luck,

My son received his 1st installment back pay in December. He got 2199.00 I used most of it for tutoring for him. I was supposed to get the 2nd installment in June. Last week I got a letter saying I had to turn in the receipts and bank statements before we got the next installment. Is this unusual? I thought the reporting was yearly?

Hi Johanna,

I can't say for sure if it is unusual or not, it's just the SSA doing it's due diligence.

Hi Towana,

I can't say for sure because I don't know the specifics of your case. You may want to speak a a representative from the SSA.

This system has been changed as of 2017 – with a couple of exceptions. Now, your Social Security Disability Payment Schedule will be based on your birthday. Here is how the break down will be going forward:

Birthday on 1st to 10th of the month: your Social Security Disability check will arrive on the second Wednesday of every month.
Birthday on 11th to 20th of the month: your Social Security Disability check will arrive on the third Wednesday of every month.
Birthday on 21st to 31st of the month: your Social Security Disability check will arrive on the fourth Wednesday of every month.

My wife got her first back pay installment in March 15, 2017. She was approved for both ssi and sad. We were told she should receive her second installment this month (September) 2017. Should the payment post to her account about the same timeframe. We are set to move to a new home that is more accessible for her medical equipment and we need to ensure that installment comes in

Thank u for the response. We did call the local rep. The only thing she kept saying was each installment is paid in 6 month intervals. The first one came on 3-15-17 so if that is true then her next one should be on or near the 15th of this month. We are also confused because she was approved for both ssi and ssdi. According to her letters SDI back pay is nearly 19,000 and ssdi is nearly 13,000 and all her lawyers fees were paid back in May. So is the installments for both or just ask because we were never told by any of the numerous people we spoke with if they are paid as one or paid separately. OMG this is all confusing..

Hi there,
for SSDI, back pay comes about four months after the start of monthly SSDI benefits, so back pay for SSI and SSDI may be separate.

I received my first SSI installment March 1,2017.I have been waiting for my second a couple of months. But actually I read where every six months, the math comes out to where October 1,2017 is six months, my fingers are crossed anyway.

Your post is from several months ago so chances are that you already remedied the situation. Considering the fact that you said that you were depending on that "back pay", I would just say that since I finally got my claim approved my attorney informed me that at any time I'm still owed back benefits & can show proof(copy of a lease agreement or such) that I need any of that money to move, change my residence etc., that the SSA will indeed take my situation into consideration.

Hi there,
Thanks for sharing! It's important for people to know that they can get back pay expedited if they have an urgent need.
