I have a 7 year old daughter with Autism. I am wanting to apply her for SSI, but I didn't know if my husbands income will affect her from receiving help?
Hi I have 4 kids 2 of them are in the spectrum so 1 is so so but the other one is non verbal m, I will leave my husband house soon so should I apply for both or just for the most difficult one ? Ty

Hi Nina,
You can always try for both. However, getting approved for SSI benefits for autism can be a challenge in general. To apply, you have to do so at your local SSA benefits. You can apply on their behalf.
I am a recent widow (husband passed away August 2018); my son is autistic and has learning disabilities; he is 32 and receives SSDI; I am 73 and get regular social security; we have a joint bank account so I can keep up paying our shared expenses (rent, utilities, food, etc.) My son received a survivor's benefit from his dad, but caused him to lose his Medicaid and he has recently had to pay his own Medicare premiums; I applied to have his Medicaid reinstated and to get help with his Medicare premiums; these items were approved, but a form was sent to us stating that we would need to have separate bank accounts; I was never told this before and I don't know what difference it makes; my son needs a lot of help and cannot manage money; I pay all our expenses but I make sure his needs are met before my own. We barely get by. It's a lot simpler just to keep things the way they are.

If you and your son have to have separate accounts, you can become the payee for him, meaning you will still manage his money. You can visit your local SSA office to set that up.
My grandson who is 4 non verbal autistic was just granted is disability and his 2 year old sister was just diagnosed autistic as well. We were told that she can not receive disability because her brother gets it. Is this true?

SSI is based on household income, so the combination of the parent's income plus your grandson's SSI may put the family over the income limit.
So I was told to file for SSI for my 5 year old daughter who has Autism and ADHD. Is there a possibility I would be able to get help with that? I had to stop going to school and stop my part time job, so I was able to put my full attention to my daughter so I’m now a stay at home mom while her dad who doesn’t live with us helps pay the bills. Would him helping pay everything affect anything?

Hi Adriana,
Your child could qualify for SSI benefits with autism and ADHD. You would need to schedule an appointment at your local SSA office to do that. Your child does not need to be present when filing their application.
When you apply for SSI benefits, the SSA will take into account your income in the application. I would recommend speaking with a SSA representative about that when you file their application.
My son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 1/2 and at the age of 5 diagnosed with ADHD . He goes to autism therapy, OT and Speech. Is there a reason we keep getting denied for SSI.

Hi Christine,
It could be for one of two reason. The first is if he does not meet the qualifications explained in the Blue Book. You can go over the Autism listing with your son's doctor to make sure he does and that you have enough proof.
The second reason could be that you exceed the income limits. SSI has strict household income limitations that must be met. You can find them here: ssa.gov/ssi/text-child-ussi.htm

To qualify for benefits, a child with autism must qualify both medically and financially. There is a very specific income limit that the SSA sets every year. This link should be able to give you the information that you need.
