I received two lump sum payments, but I have not spent all of the funds. I want to make a funeral arrangement and buy a car. How soon must I spend the lump sum payment.

Hi Johnny,
You may receive them in the same form that you received your first lump sum.
I got some money but y do I have to wait 6 months for the rest of my money n is this new or dose go for everyone who just got s.s.I plezzz explain the 6months to me
In reply to I got some money but y do I by Anonymous (not verified)
Hi there,
The SSA requires a six month waiting period because the SSA requires SSI recipients to have less than $2000 in savings, and the six month waiting period is to ensure that the money is used.

Hello,
I am unable to say for sure. I would recommend speaking to a SSA representative. 1-800-772-1213.
Best Wishes,

i have recently received disability back pay i have a minor child who is due a lump sum payment as well. One of my adult son took out a home equity loan which he used to build us a small house on his property which we pay monthly. I have been told I cannot use my minor son's portion to help pay the note down. I do not understand this as we have used our funds to take care of him and his housing needs. It has been 2 and a half years since I have worked. I want to pay the note down as it would actually give us and my minor son more money each month. Is there anyway around this. My minor son is 17 and has down's syndrome and we take great care of him.

Hi Donald,
If your minor child is receiving benefits based off of your work record, you may be able to do so as the SSA has different rules for benefits paid based on work record. If your benefits are income based, you may not be able to use those benefits to do so. Also, if your adult son charges you and your minor child rent, your adult son would be able to pay the note down with that, but he may not be able to do so using your minor child's SSI benefit.

Thanks Bryan. My son does not charge us rent per se but we pay his home equity loan monthly. I want to pay him off as he has been a great help to us and will take care of his little brother when my wife and I pass. It makes no sense to me that I cannot use the money he is getting off my disability claim. It would actually give us more money each month if we did not have a housing payment. We have had to buy furniture, new appliances, my son a bedroom suit. His needs have always come before ours. My disability is based on my work credits as I have worked for over 40 years and have been a strong salary earner. Like I said before I have not worked in over 2 and a half years and we have kept our minor son up very well. I realize some people just want to use their kids which makes it hard on people who want to do the right thing. My disability process took a little over 2 years. I had all sorts of documentation from military doctors but it still took that long. I did not have to go to a hearing as the judge looked at my records, called my lawyer and told him I was getting a fully favorable judgement. Please forgive my rambling I am just venting as this whole process has been demeaning. Again I know bad apples spoil things for those who want to do right.

HI Donald,
No problem at all! As you're on SSDI benefits, there are different rules for spending benefits as they are not income-based, and it may not affect your benefits to pay the loan directly.
Ok, so I went to my hearing on April 20th & was approved n court for my SSI. It's now June 4th & I haven't even received my approval letter, or anything else.
I've called the Social Security Office. 1st time (about 3 weeks after the hearing) they tell me the judge hasn't written his decision out yet. No biggie...I know it takes time. The next week I call & they tell me the writer has it. I call the next week & the writer still has it. A couple of weeks later they just tell me they haven't received anything & it's being worked on. That it can take up to 60-90 days & I wa on day 42 (this was like Wednesday or so..).
It's not that I "just want my money"..I'm wanting to start purchasing this home I've been looking at.. I'm worried if it takes too much longer I won't be able to get it.
Can anybody tell me about how much longer??

Hi Delonie,
Every case is different, and because of that decisions can take varying amounts of time to process. Hang in there!
In reply to Hi Delonie, by Bryan
The "decision writer" has written the decision & it is back with the judge to review & to sign it. How possible is it that I will receive it by the end of the month?
Another question...
I had seen somewhere that you can receive all SSI back pay if you're planning to buy a home...
Is that true & how would I go about asking for it?
In reply to The "decision writer by Delonie (not verified)
Hi Delonie,
We really could not say as all cases are different and can take varying amounts of time. IF you would need backpay for something like housing, it may be a good idea to contact your local SSA office regarding this with documentation of your need for the back pay ( for example, an eviction notice, past due notice, ect.)
