I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Michele,
The money that your child was receiving was an individual benefit based on your work record, rather than a portion of your own benefits. As such, that money would not be added to your benefits amount.
My x husband and I share joint custody of our 15 yo son. My x receives ssdi for himself and my son. I do not know how much he receives for my son. I do not get any child support because of our joint custody arrangement. Now my son has chosen to live with me full time. Am i entitled to any monies received for my son.

You may be entitled to his benefits if:
You were married to the person for over ten years;
You are at least 62 years old;
You are currently unmarried; and
You are not eligible for a larger Social Security payment on your own record

My ex filed for disability. We never married. I have been custodial parent. He told me I would be our daughters payee. Can I trust this? I could see him taking her money. He owes back child support.

My sons father committed suicide. He owed back child support. Attorney General told me to check with social security since child support cancells out that ssi might give my son a check for deceased father. We are not married or together is this true

Your son may be eligible for survivor's benefits based off of his father's work record, however I really could not say if there would be any way to recover back child support through the SSA.
I am on disability and have a newborn. I have my phone appt in 3 days. How long does it take them to add the $ to the acct for the baby and how much is it usually ? I get less than $1,000 a month and no other income.

Hi Crystal,
Auxiliary benefits are generally about 50% of the primary beneficiary's monthly benefit amount. I really could not say how long it would take as every case is different.

Your child would receive benefits based on which parent would have the higher auxiliary benefit amount.
My husband just started receiving disability we have two children 14 18 the back pay for the 18 dose all of the money go to him or do we just give him some of it

Generally auxiliary benefits for minors have quite a bit of latitude as far as how they should be used, I would say that decision would be up to the family to decide how to distribute those benefits.
If my son is fifteen and convicted of a crime do the auxiliary benefits revert back to me. His father. I was told if he was committed he still receives them. But if convicted what happens

You may still be able to receive them, as they are benefits based off of your work record, however they would not be sent to you if he became ineligible for auxiliary benefits. You may want to contact the SSA regarding this.
I have sole custody of my son for almost 13 years. My ex is going on disability and states he needs his DOB and social security number. Please advise why the social security number is needed as I do not want to run into any issues as I am the one who claims him on taxes and such. He does not see my child.

Your ex may be applying for auxiliary dependent benefits for your son, you may want to coordinate with your local SSA office regarding this as they can assign you as the representative payee rather than the father. You can find a listing of them here:

It might not affect anything, however it may be a good idea to coordinate with the father to ensure that any information you need about his claim is available to you.
