Are you eligible for Disabled Parking Plates or Placards in Kansas?
A licensed medical professional needs to verify your impaired mobility and state that you meet the eligibility requirements. Specifics that differ from the general eligibility guidelines include:
- You can’t walk 100 feet without rest
- You have a severe visual impairment
- Due to an arthritic, neurological or orthopedic condition, your mobility is limited
- You have lung disease with forced expiratory volume for 1 second, when measured by spirometry, is less than 1 liter
- You have loss of function of one or both legs
Businesses or agencies that transport disabled individuals may also apply to receive handicap parking privileges.
What is the Kansas application process for Disabled Parking Plates and Placards?
You can get the Certification of Disability for Disabled Parking Placard and/or Plate (Form TR-159) by going to your County Treasurer’s Local Motor Vehicle Office or printing the document online.
When applying, keep in mind that you may choose one of the following options:
- 1 disabled license plate and/or 1 placard, or
- 2 placards and NO disabled license plate
All applications for disability parking have to be made at your local county treasurer’s office. Disabled license plates require a mere $0.50 fee for the reflective plates.
You and your healing arts licensed professional just need to complete and sign the application with all necessary information.
After obtaining disabled parking privileges, whether with a license plate or placard, you may park at parking meters for no more than 24 hours without any parking fees in the state of Kansas.
How long are Disabled Parking Plates and Placards Valid in Kansas?
Depending on the handicap parking plate or placard, temporary or permanent, the validity varies.
- Temporary Placard: valid up to 6 months, unless otherwise specified by your healing arts professional
- Permanent Placard or Plate: valid for more than 6 months
Disability License Plates need to be renewed before the expiration date provided and may be done at your nearest county treasurer’s office.
Are there Kansas Disabled Veteran Plates?
Kansas Disabled Veteran license plates are available to any Kansas resident veteran, or individual stationed at a Kansas military base, with at least a 50% service-connected disability. Your service-connected disability needs to be certified by the Veterans Administration.
You could also be entitled to compensation for your injuries by the Veterans Administration if you:
- Lost or permanently lost the use of one or both hands
- Lost or permanently lost the use of one or both feet
- Have a permanently visual impairment in both eyes
You will need to complete the Application for Disabled Veterans License Plate (TR-103), which requires the Regional Director of the Veterans Administration signature.
There is no registration fee for the initial Disabled Veteran license plate, but property tax must still be paid for the vehicle. Each additional plate will require the standard registration fees.
After experiencing the benefits of the Kansas Disabled Veteran license plate, you need to renew the plate before the expiration date listed. Similarly, you can appreciate the benefits of Social Security Disability after filing a claim.
Can I report Handicap Parking Abuse?
Unfortunately, there are instances where those who don’t have mobile impairments falsely utilize handicap parking spaces, plates, and placards.
If you happen to see someone easily moving about from an empty car in a handicap space, there’s a chance they shouldn’t park there.
An individual who takes advantage of disability parking privileges will be guilty of an unclassified misdemeanor, resulting in a fine between $100 and $300. If an individual provides false information to obtain handicap parking privileges results in a class C misdemeanor.
You can report this behavior by contacting local authorities or property owners of the space. Be sure to provide as much detail as possible of the incident and license plate information.
Where are the Kansas County Treasurers Offices located?
