I have been my brother's re-payee(sp?) for several years and feel that he is more than capable of handling his own money. What is the process to change this arrangement?

Can you have a payee and still be in charge of your money? And if your payee removes themself and if u don't have one to replace the payee will ssa stop your check till u have a new payee?

Hi there,
the SSA would appoint a new payee at that point, and they may hold any funds until you have a new payee appointed.

Hi Leslie,
We are not affiliated with the federal government or the SSA and cannot cancel your disability checks. However, you may want to contact the nearest SSA office with this information, they can help you with this. You can find a listing of SSA offices here:

I am my daughters payee. She is 18yrs old with bipolar. She wants all her money sent to her now ,so she is going down to SSI to remove me. What can I do about this, can she remove me without me being there.

Hi Christina,
She may not be eligible for benefits past the age of 18 if she is on child SSI, but if she is on adult SSI and is required to have a payee she may not be able to change her payee without some compelling reason for the SSA to appoint another payee.

Hi Lisa,
If you're not sure who the payee is, you can always check with the SSA. I would recommend making an appointment at your closest SSA office by calling 1-800-772-1213.

I am on disability and I am the responsible payee for my son whom moved in with his mom. I am putting the full amount in a checking account for him but I receive additional money from insurance in an amount for 67% of my income that I made at my job. They take out the amount that I make from SSDI and the amount my child gets from SSDI so I am loosing money because of this. His mother has a felony so she cannot be the responsible payee, what would I do in this situation? I do not want to be the responsible payee but there is no one else that can be and it causes me to loose that income.

Hi Jeff,
You do not need a family member to be the representative payee, they can be a third party that is not related but is willing to use the funds for the child.
