I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Tristin,
She may be able to receive auxiliary benefits from her father's SSDI, but only until she turns 18. She could qualify for SSI benefits on her own based on her conditions.
Best of Luck,
Eric
How soon after you turn in your bank information and birth certificate will you start receiving auxiliary benefits for your child, if they was approved back in February 2017. Because I'm just finding out.

Hi Gloria,
The SSA may require a five month waiting period for auxiliary benefits.

So, my ex has filed for disability a year and half ago. We have a 10 year old daughter together, but she is not on his application because he is not on her birth certificate. We are currently getting this resolved. My question is will my daughter get back pay or just start receiving benefits if and when he is approved?

My son receives a check because I'm disabled. His father passed away what happens? Does he draw mine or survivors?

Hi there,
He may be able to draw whichever benefit would be a larger amount.
I am being awarded custody of my granddaughter (age2), I am on permanent disability not SSI, does she qualify to get payments thru my case?

Hi Karen,
She may be able to do so, however it may require you to formally adopt your grandchild. It may be a good idea to contact a local SSA office regarding this, you can find a listing of them here:

Hi Bob,
They may do so as both of you would be presumed to be contributing to the child's upkeep and well-being.

Hi Michelle,
Your child may not become ineligible for SSI benefits due to grades.
