When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.
I received a letter stating I am waiting on a non medical decision. I have been waiting two months with no word. How long does it take before non medical make their decision ?

Hi Rudy,
Unfortunately, there's no exact time frame on when they'll make a decision because every case varies.
Best of Luck,

Hi Erica,
You will get back pay and you could get it for all the way back for when you first applied for benefits.

Hello!! Can someone tell me how long it will be before I hear anything,My appt were May2,2017 The judge said they found me disable I didn't recieve anything at all I had a lawyer I wonder what's taking so long. How long does it take to get a decision letter in the mail.It has been a month in a half I haven't received nothing every time I call they always tell me it still pending I just want to know what's going on..
In reply to Hello!! Can someone tell me by Storm (not verified)
Hello,
Unfortunately there is no exact time table of when you will hear back. Generally those who are denied benefits receive their letter sooner because they only have a certain amount of days to appeal the decision.

I was approved for survivor benefits Feb 2016, I recieved my backpay in July 2016, only they withheld $6,000+ of it claiming overpayment fees.
I appealed it within 60 days to prove it wasn't my fault the overpayments. And when I called the lady on the phone said that those overpayments were showing up as having been waived so therefore it was a mistake to have withheld it and I should recieve the $6,000+ back.
It's almost a year later and anytime I call I get a different answer from, "It could take 45 more days" to "I don't see it processing.".
Next month it will have been a full year.
Where do I go from here, to get to the bottom of this underpayment?
Besides going down to the local SSA office, I am for most part too disabled to leave the house except for certain doctors appointments/offices.

Hi Henry,
I am so sorry to hear that. I would recommend speaking to a disability rights advocate or attorney. You can fill out this evaluation to speak to one today:http://www.disability-benefits-help.org/form/free-disability-evaluation

Many comments have asked about how long it takes to get back pay. I honestly think it depends on the case and if your getting SSI or SSDI. My husband applied for SSDI in September 2015 and was approved April of 2016. He received a call from SS telling him he was approved, what his monthly benefit would be, his backpay amount and they verified his banking information. Two days later a lump sum of his backpay was deposited into his bank account and later that month he received his first SSDI monthly check. His backpay was a big lump sum as his onset date of disability was April 2014 so he received 19 months of backpay. The first 5 months after your disability onset date are not paid for SSDI..I'm not sure with SSA.

Thank you for Sharing Angel! You're right, it really depends on your case.

Hi Markeisha,
I really could not say, you may want to contact your local SSA office for updates on your child's back pay. You can find a listing of them here:
