Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Tracy,
Unfortunately, SSDI dependent benefits are generally intended for dependents who are permanent dependents.

Hi Rita,

Unfortunately there is no black and white answer for that. Wishing you and your child nothing but the best.

Hi James,
You may want to consult your state's laws regarding this as family law and law regarding child support varies by state.

Hi There,

I would recommend calling the SSA and speaking to a representative from there. 1-800-772-1213.

HI BJ,
Unfortunately, you may need to adopt your grandson for him to be eligible for benefits based on your social security benefits.

HI Merrie,
Unfortunately, he may not be able to. However if your granson has a disability, he may be eligible for SSI benefits.
