I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

If the child is eligible for benefits based on the deceased's work record, then she may be eligible for benefits. It may be a good idea to contact the SSA about this.
My son receives social security because his dad passed away. Hes autistic as well, is there any other benefits he can apply for?

I am so sorry to hear that. He may be able to receive SSI payments on behalf of his autism. You would have to make an appointment at your local SSA office to due so.

The SSA may still require that another person receives your benefits for you.
My bd get ssid so his daughter receive a check also and shw has his last name. I am I'm expecting our second child and I want this one to have my last name. My question is will the new baby receive a check to if she dont have his last name.

She may be able to qualify under her father's SSDI, even without his last name, however it is always best to double check with the SSA just to be sure.

She may be able to qualify for auxiliary benefits under your Social Security until she is 18.
I became entitled to ssdi in May 2013 and didn't realize I could list my stepchild as a dependent so only listed my bio daughter and was told when I called about her paperwork for aging out that I could apply for him. I filed in May 2017 and was just denied based on not providing one half support. I did not ask for back pay so why are they using the year bf my entitlement ... shouldn't it be the year bf his filing date. How do they determine one half support if we pool all of our earnings (I was on UE the year bf my entitlement) and how do they determine what it costs to support him. I live in Cincinnati Oh and the rep who worked my claim would not discuss any of this or give me any information, never had me complete an actual application and forgot to ask for a 783 form. I can't find any info on my questions and can't find an advocate or attorney who has knowledge or wants to help us file an appeal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HI Debra,
I'm sorry to hear about that! It seems like the agent may have been under the impression that you were applying for SSI, as SSDI benefits for dependents do not rely on calculating how much of household income the child receives per month.

Hi Bryan, there was a new rule put into effect in 2010 that says a "stepchild" must be dependent on you for one half their support at one of several times i.e. whe you apply, when you become entitled or the child's filing date. It would seem that since I never filed for my stepchild it would be his filing date. But since I now have to file an appeal for reconsideration, I would like to try to find the correct dependency point and everyone at SSA is very vague, I have gotten different answers from several ppl. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this.

Hello. I have twin boys who are 5 years old and both receive ssi. Me and their mother are separated. I as their father applied for benefits when they were only months old and have been receiving ssi payments as their guardian payee. With our separation, me and my kids mother recently agreed that it's best if one parent is one child's payee. I have my kids about 90% of the time, through school and doctors appointments... ect. The thing is, the kids` home address on the paperwork is their moms address. Now their mom is threatening to not give me one of my son's benefits. I got a letter after I sent in my updated information for my son's medical files and info that stated that "they have decided that my son's benefits will be paid to someone else". How can I prove I have my kids the most and care and take car of them as much as I say I do. Ide rather not let this get to going to court to settle with their mom. Any suggestions?

You may want to collect documents establishing this, such as mail addressed to them at your address, school correspondence, legal paperwork that establishes this, ect.
