Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

HI there,
Unfortunately the SSA does not offer benefits for people caring for their children who are receiving SSI.

My 9 years old child and I have PTSD. We have fear of falling asleep, due to past abuse and it is hard. I homeschool because neither are ready to separate after what we went through. I am the only one with parental rights and do not have child support. I do house cleaning and some baby sitting because it's the only way to homeschool. I get exploited a lot. I lately relocated with a family and we have our own place, but it is hard. The husband flirted me, the wife is angry because she found out the husband cheated for many years, and their children have a lots of troubles. I don't want to go back to work for them because the husband pulled my son's pants down out of a joke and one of the son was forcing my son to look at men privates online. I'm scare to apply for disability for us because I do not want to take sleeping pills or worse be forced to send him to school, or for us to be separated. I can make it financially this month, but that's it.

Hi Isabelle,
I'm sorry to hear about that! You may want to contact your local police about this as exposing children to pornographic material is illegal in many jusridictions.

HI Natalie,
I could not say. If your child's father is receiving SSDI, your child may be eligible for benefits based off of that.

Hi There,

I would recommend speaking to someone at the SSA regarding that. 1-800-772-1213.

If I had paternity test done but the father is not on birth certificate, but proved to be biological father, could my daughter receive back pay if he is on SSD? That is if children qualify for benefits of course? And she is 16 Years old.

My daughter's father said he added her to his benefits, but I found out that was not true. How do I go about adding her myself since we are not married?

Hi Tina,

You can go online and do it if you are on SSDI, but if you are on SSI you would have to schedule an appointment at your local SSA office.

Hi There,

Unfortunately there is no black and white answer for this since every case/judge is different, but I would recommend checking in regularly with your account online.
