how do I stop being representative payee?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have been my brother's re-payee(sp?) for several years and feel that he is more than capable of handling his own money. What is the process to change this arrangement?

Hi Janice,

If you wish to do so, you can remove yourself as a payee. You would have to go down to your local SSA office and do so there.

Hello, I am posting this for my sister. I need to know who she needs to contact in order to have someone removed from being her payee on her social security benefits. The relationship she was in with her partner was very abusive mentally. My siblings and I are trying to get her out of the situation by finding her a new place to live. While doing so we realized that her ex-partner is actually a beneficiary of her disability which is very odd due to the fact that my sister is very capable of taking care of her own financial responsibilities. I do not know when this it was occurred or why it occurred. Can I talk to someone on on her behalf? Or is this something that she can do on her own. Does she have to go into the office? Or is this something that she can do online. I'm only asking these questions due to the fact that I'm not in the same state as her but I so desperately would like to help her in any way I can't.

Hi There,

To change a payee, it has to be done in person. I believe that the new payee can go in and change the payee without the beneficiary. If your sister wants to become her own, I believe she has to do it. I would call the SSA before just to confirm this though. Their number is 1-800-772-1213.

Also, if your sister decides to become her own payee, just know it will automatically trigger a reevaluation of her case by the SSA.

Hi Grace,

To change your son's payee, your son will have to go to an SSA office and change it in person. If possible, have your daughter go with your son with a picture ID and her Social Security card. Most of the time, the next check gets sent to the new payee. Once in a while, it does take a little longer though.

I have been my daughters representative payee for many years. She is diagnosed as bipolar with depression and social disabilities
She has been in programs since she was 12 or 13 and I have maintained and reported yearly as required.

She is now 18 as of September 5, 2018. I no longer wish to be her payee representative. I cannot be responsible for her money and there is a strain relationship. She is still under DMH and are looking for a group or step down adult home run by DMH. She is now getting her checks directly in her name and as of yet have not given it to her. She opened an account today so she can take care of her own.
I need an answer as soon as possible as I didn't realize I would still be considered payee representative when she turned 18 and checks were in her name. Do have to get her set up for direct deposit I guess.
How do I handle this? I really wish to revoke my payee representative status.

Hi Kathy,

If possible, have your daughter go to an SSA office to change her payee as she has to do it in person. They can assign her one if need be. Just know, if she decides to become her own payee, the SSA will likely reopen her case and may take away or reduce her benefits.

Hi Lorie,

Your son will have to go to a local SSA office and request to change payee in person if possible. If the new payee can go as well, that will make it much easier.
