Hi Bill,
The amount of hours a week you work does not matter. You cannot make more than $850 a month. If you make more you will enter the Trial Work period.
My brother is on SSDI due to his bipolar disorder. Previously he was a hair stylist but could not sustain his occupation in a traditional salon due to the stress. He now works detailing cars at an autobody shop, and can only work less than 20 hours a week due to doctor's orders.
He has the opportunity to work 20 hours per week or less at a residential treatment center for boys, cutting the boys' hair, mostly buzz cuts. Very low stress compared to his previous life in the salon doing womens' hair, etc. Although we are worried that by returning to his "previous occupation" this could jepordize his SSDI. Your thoughts?

Hi Jen,
If your brother makes less than $880 a month, then his benefits should be unaffected. Once he makes $880 or more, he will be entered into the trial work period.
Is it wise to work part time while on ssdi? I read that it will trigger a review and ssa may determine you can work full time even if you make under the sga amount

Hi Cyndi,
If you begin to make over the SGA regularly, then it may trigger a review and you're benefits may be stopped. If you remain under the SGA then you should be fine.
I get Social Security disability payments for bipolar, anxiety and agoraphobia. I have begun painting. Can I sell my paintings if I stay under the monthly income limit? I actually would make very little off of each painting after deducting what I spend on materials.

As long as you stay under $880, you won't enter into the TWP. Your benefits won't be affected.
I am 60 years old I have copd after two to four hours I get very tired and makes it hard to breath I have also artheritis in my hands I have triger fingers I work as a janitor what do I need to do to apply for ssdi and still work two or three hours a day its to hard to breath working eight hours I have worked full time for over 40 years.i have a also s short family life history
I am bipolar and on SSD, what is the difference between Trial Work Period amounts($880+) and SGA at ($1,180+) it is so confusing when you want to work part-time but do not want to go into TWP. One says you can make less than $1,180/mth in 2019 and the other says you can only make less than $880/mth+ in 2019 or it will affect you by putting you into a 9 month trial period. And once you pass that you lose your benefits. Please, what is the amount? Thank you for your time

Hi Pam,
As you mentioned if you make over $880 you are entered into the TWP. If during that 9 months you make the SGA or higher, you'll likely loose your benefits. If you make less than the SGA but more than $880, that month will be considered part of your TWP. It likely won't impact your benefits. This is all to my understanding, but the TWP and SGA is complex, so for a definitive answer, you can call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

He can work and collect SSDI, but if he earns more than $771 a month it could trigger a trial work period.

Hi Leslie,
You are able to work on SSDI, however it is likely that it will result in a partial reduction of your benefits roughly equal to half of the income you make during that month.
Can a person work temporary elections (two weeks) without loosing benefits?
