I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Candace,
If they are dependents of your son and he receives SSDI, then they may be eligible for auxiliary benefits if they are under 18 or enrolled full time in school and are unmarried. If they are dependents, you can list them on your son's application.
I'm getting SSDI and SSI because I didn't work enough to get straight SSDI so I get the bear amount of money and I just found out I have a daughter and was wondering would she automatically get a check to

Hi Buddy,
If your daughter is a dependent, under 18 or enrolled full time in school and is unmarried then she may qualify for auxiliary benefits under your SSDI.
Hi, my granddaughter was was born premature and she she had heart surgery and two more surgeries now waiting for her back surgery hopefully the last
She is now 9 months old and is on g tube feeding which means her feeding is scheduled and on breathing.
My question is can I apply for SSI or SSdi as her grandmother

Hi Lisa,
You can apply for SSI. You'll need to provide the financial information for whoever she lives with as SSI is also based on household income. If she lives with her parent(s), then the SSA will take into consideration their household income.
I would also recommend you review the Blue Book with her doctor to make sure she meets the medical requirements.
I am going thru divorce and my soon to be ex get disability payments for himself and our 2 children as well as my daughter who is not his child. I have been awarded full custody and he is not paying child support. When divorce is final can I call and get the children’s ss

Hi Sandra,
It sounds like your ex-husband is the representative payee for your daughter. To switch this you will have to make an appointment with your local SSA office. It works best if all of the parties involved are present. Since you have full custody and in theory need to cover the expenses this seems like a good switch.
I receive SSDI for myself and auxiliary benefits for my children.. One of my children is special needs and doesn't qualify on his own due to the fact that I have to much property (he's 14 yrs old.) My question if that if he stays in high school until 21 years old, can he continue receiving auxiliary benefits until age 21?

Hi There,
He should be able to.
Additionally, once he turns 18, he may be able to qualify for SSI on his own because financial records.
If I qualify for Adult Child Disability under my fathers SSI will my 15 year old daughter also receive Benefits under her grandfathers SSI?
In reply to If I qualify for Adult Child by Ann (not verified)
Hi Ann,
It's likely she won't. A grandchild can only qualify for auxiliary benefits under their grandparent if the grandchild’s parents are deceased or also disabled, the child had been living with the grandparents before they turned 18 years old, in the year before the grandparent was eligible for SSDI benefits the child received at least half of his or her financial support from that grandparent, and if the child is under 12 months old, he or she must have been living with the grandparent since birth.
I adopted my son in 2018 I did not know if he was allowed to receive benefits when I found out he was we tried to do it and someone was using his Social Security number so we got a new Social Security number and I filed for his disability through me and the woman told me I get 12 months backpay is that correct even though he started getting checks and I have not received any backpay

Hi Cindy,
It can take about 4 months after you begin receiving disability benefits before you receive your backpay.
My childrens father intents to "act crazy" to get a SSI check that way he doesnt have to pay childsupport. In that case they can not deduct childsupport from him. Would my children qualify for any type of benefit?
In reply to My childrens father intents by Eet (not verified)
Hi Eet,
Child support and disability benefits are two separate entities. If your child's father receives SSDI, then your chidren may be eligible for auxiliary benefits. These are only available for those receiving SSDI, not SSI.
I’ve been receiving social security for a a year now I got a letter saying my daughter is eligible for disability from 4/17-3/20 and every month she gets 742.00 now what does it mean when they say the would pay from 4/17-2/20 is that back pay and how long till I get it they already asked for banking info and I’ve completed the application and approved and it does state that’s she’s entitled pay from that time period???

Hi Mike J,
That means she will be receiving back pay as the SSA has determined she should have been receiving benefits from 4/2017 and on. Back pay typically comes about 4 months after your daughter begins receiving benefits. She should receive a letter in the mail stating how much she should be receiving.

Hello,
If you are receiving disability benefits, your grandchildren may be eligible to also receive benefits. You should contact your local SSA office to ask which options are available for you.
