I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Calie,
As long as his child remains eligible, he may still receive benefits based off of his father's SSDI benefits.

Hi Paulene,
Yes, you child may be eligible for benefits based off of you account, and it would be around half the amount of your benefits.
I recieve ssi and was told to go sign up for my 14yr old who is bipolar and has adhd...do u all think he will qualify..fyi...i was told by my doctors office to do so...he is also sziezo effective

Hi Nichol,
Although your doctor has recommended you to receive SSI for your child, it does not guarantee you will be able to receive benefits. You will need to review the Blue Book to see if your son qualifies, document your son's behavior, and get your doctor to fill out a residual functional capacity form. Hope this helps!
My soon to be ex just got approved with social security. He is very sick and cannot work. I have sole custody of a 14 yr old and a 8 yr old. I recently contacted socialsecurity and they needed my info as well as children's info, they set me up next month with a phone interview, what happens after that?

Thank you for your question. I believe they will have a phone interview with you to ask about your ex's medical condition, past medical history, past jobs, and if he is able to work in order for him to quality for social security benefits.
I have permanent custody of my thirteen year old sister. Am I eligible to get help with her in any away through ssi?

Hi Kristin,
If your sister has a disability, she may be eligible for benefits, however she would need to meet the income and financial resource limits, along with the medical criteria, to qualify.
My dad adopted my son 11 years ago and has been receiving Social Security disability benefits through my dad and my deceased mom...I am trying to get guardianship of my son soon and I am wondering if he will still receive his money even if I have guardianship?

Hi Kristal,
If the child is otherwise eligible, he may be able to keep receiving benefits.
I have recently been awarded SS. I have a son who was diagnosed with Asbergers Syndrome at 21 years old and ADHD. He currently takes medication and is holding down a full time job making approximately $1100 to $1200 per month. He is now 27 years old and doesn't want to apply for SS to his credit but my LTD co. who currently pays an offset to my SS benefit wants me to apply for my sons benefit since I listed him on my initial application as a dependent. Back then his condition was different and was having difficulty holding a job. Since then his condition has improved. Should I or do I have a right to make a claim?

Hi there,
You may want to put the claim forward, since your son is close to the substantial gainful activity limit of 1,130 a month, he may qualify for benefits depending on the severity of his condition.
My 17 year old daughter has been diagnosed with ADHD, Anxiety, mood disorder and substance abuse. She is in a residential facility now, but will be discharged next week because our private insurance doesn't feel she is meeting criteria for that level of care. Could she be eligible to collect benefits for outpatient care, secondary insurance and/or help with schooling. Her last school doesn't feel they are a fit for her any longer. Very upsetting situation. I worry about her not getting the help she needs when she comes home. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jenn,
If you meet the income and financial resource requirements, she may qualify for SSI benefits. After she is 18, she may qualify based on her own income and resources. Here's some more information about SSI:
