When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.

Will I receive back pay 5 months before I applied it said it on statement by lawyer
In reply to Will I receive back pay 5 by Maria green (not verified)
Hi Maria,
You would not be able to receive back pay prior to applying ( as you would have to apply to receive back pay), however you may be eligible for back pay for the months prior to your application.
Do i qualify for back pay if I got ssdi approved? I'm so confused and stressed out because I need the money right away. I've been receiving ssdi since June 2016

Hi Olivia,
No, not everyone who qualifies for SSDI also qualifies for back pay.
I originally applied for SSDI in 2010. I even got a hearing. I miss the hearing and decided to try working again. Working failed so I reapplied in 2014 . Will disability payments go back to original application date? . Diagnosed bipolar II in 2009.

Hi Jamie,
You may only be eligible for back pay from the date of your last application.

Hi Jamie,
Depending on the amount of work credits you have, that may not be a problem.
My girlfriend was approved for ssi in 2014 she applied in 2011the judge only back dated to 2012 so She went back to court to see if she can get it back from the first time applying. She was granted it. How long will it take to revive her back money

Hi Nicole,
I'm not entirely sure, but if you contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 they may be able to help you find out when your girlfriend would receive her money.
After 5 years of being homeless and on the streets, I finally got fully approved for ssdi on Nov.24th 2015... I received my first check on feb. 24th, and said my back pay would get here within 60-90 days.. after several lies and mixups, it has been nealy ten months, and I have received no back pay yet, my health is not real good I have rotting sand infected teeth witch are affecting my health and possibly my heart..I have tried and tried... now they won't even give me a time frame!! I worked hard all my life... this is unfair.. sincerely Steve

Hi Steve,
I'm sorry to hear all that! It's possible that you may have not been eligible for back pay, unfortunately.

Hi Angelia,
Cases can vary in response time, but they it's possible you may have missed a letter. You may want to contact the SSA as they can give you the most up-to-date information on your case.
Hi. I would like to known whether i can still claim disability benefits from sss. I had my total hysterectomy done 3 years ago.
In reply to Hi. I would like to known by Karen (not verified)
Hi Karen,
You may be able to if you are unable to work due to your condition. If you do apply, keep in mind that many applications are denied initially and it may be a good idea to contact a disability advocate or attorney. If you fill out the form on the left, we can have one reach out to you.
