When I initially met with my attorney, I was told that back pay would go back one year from application, minus 5 months (I had already waited over 2 years to file because I was told I would have "full recovery" after my 2 fusion surgeries). I've received my acceptance letter but not my back pay yet, and during my search for more info on the process I came across a SSDI page stating that even if it takes 24 months for your claim to get approved, you can only receive pay for 12 months. Can anybody help clarify this for me please? Also, I have friends who received their back pay before or immediately after their approval letters (NY), but I've seen posts by people saying it took several months so I was wondering if there was a formula for when I can expect mine? I'm not looking to go on a spending spree, but I have a mortgage, car payment, property and school taxes, and children to feed and clothe as well as one in an expensive college. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and all input is appreciated.

Hi Wil,
I'm happy to help!
I have received my first check how long before I get back pay

Hi Ronny,
the SSA generally waits about four months after you start receiving benefits to send out back pay.
I have received my second Social security payment and also for this month.when will I receive my disability backpay? My 90 days are up.? I know its very hard trying to make ends meet.Four years of this. It's so very sad,I have worked all my life sometimes2 full time jobs just to take care of my children.Four years ago I could no longer work. That has been the hardest thing in my life to live with.Going back and forth to doctors paying for my medicines etc.I have payed into social security all my life, this is a system I just dont understand.Have never asked for any type of goverment services, now all I need is the packpay owed to me,in 2014 I lost my home after 16 years, something I worked so hard for my children and myself.I have always followed the rules and laws of our land, never even had a speeding ticket. But going through this process has made me so depress and sadden.People just don't seem to care about your well being,The lawyers don't care, they seem to care in the beginning but after they get paid they don't even want to talk to you anymore.I have no offsets, when I spoke to social security office I was told I would receive it within 90 days, but that has not happened.God Help us all.

Hi Monica,
The SSA usually takes about four months from when you first receive monthly benefits to send out back pay, if the recipient is eligible.
I was told by my lawyer 10\03\16 that I had won. Had a phone interview a week or so later. I haven't gotten a letter yet.....Was wonder when and if there is a set time for my monthly benefit to begin. I will be getting back pay, but I realize this will come later. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
every case may take a different length of time as they are all different, however if approved you would receive benefits five months after approval for SSDI benefits, and you would receive back pay four months after that.
My husband was awarded disability June22 He died JJuly 2. His father said the back pay doesn't go to me. Social Security says it does. Our daughter and myself receive a monthly benefit. But I have yet to receive a back pay check .

Hi Leah,
I'm sorry to hear about that! You may want to contact the SSA regarding your husband's back pay, their number is 1-800-772-1213

If you received ssi and found out later you were eligible for ssdi five years ago will you get back pay.

Hi there,
You may be eligible for back pay if awarded SSDI benefits.
I'm 59 yrs old and finally got fully favorable decision from ALJ hearing. Decision letter came on October 20, 2016. He set my onset date at July 31, 2012. So it's been almost 48 months when you subtract the 5 month hold. My backpay is $105,000. My lawyer told me that I won't get backpay for my 11 yr old son. I have no idea why she said that. He lives with me and my wife fulltime and I help take care of him on a daily basis. I talked to someone at SS and they said he would be entitled to backpay and 50% monthly benefits going forward. Can anyone verify that! Should I go apply for him now (30 days after my decision letter)? Reading the posts here it seems he may get the backpay much sooner than I will. It's a lot of money, $50,000. I've been waiting almost 5 years with no income. Anyone have advice on this?

Hi Doug,
It may be a good idea to apply for him now if he was not on the initial application. He may not get back pay any sooner, however he may be eligible for benefits.
I received my first disability payment July 13 of this year & was told different dates that I receive my back payment. Now my question is how much longer do I have to wait it's been four months already.

Hi Latricia,
I'd say your back pay may be coming soon, however it's always a good idea to check with the SSA regarding your back pay.
I applied for social security 2015 got denied did an appeal and October of 2016 I got a call from social security asking me to fax over my sick pay stubs that my employer was paying me at some point so I did that and heard nothing back then I get a questionnaire in the mail for me to fill out I did and sent it back does this mean I'm approve or about to be

Hi Candy,
It's really impossible to know for sure--the SSA likely just needs additional clerical information. Best of luck with your claim!
