Applying online

To apply for disability benefits, do I have to go to my local Social Security office or can I apply online? Is one way better than another?

Thank you!

Hi Cynthia,
You can apply at any time, the SSA will determine if you are eligible for benefits.

Hi Jackie,
I hope you're feeling better! That seems like it's a difficult experience to say the least. You can apply online at www.ssa.gov .

how do I transition from working full time to not working under disability, as my MD states I should consider medical disability soon due to my chronic rheumatoid arthritis and the increased pain and challenges at work completing tasks as a nurse manager. I am having another surgery soon to fuse 2 right fingers due to deformity...should that be my start date for not working?

Hi Molly,
I would pick a date that reflects these three things:

  • You show the absence of Substantial Gainful Activity ( being able to earn more than $1,130 a month), or the ability to find any gainful employment.
  • You have a severe impairment that can be proven medically which prevents you from being employable or able to work.
  • This disability that is expected to last at least 12 months or until death.

I wouldn't be able to say with any certainty exactly when you should stop working, however you would be able to keep working while applying if you are not able to earn over the Substantial Gainful Activity limit. It may take a good amount of time to have your case approved, and having a long term lack of income may be a hardship.
