I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

I have full and sole custody of my two grandson's. My husband just past on March 4th. He would have been 61 on May 31st. I'm 55. Can I get benefits for my grandson's? He was our only source of income.

I'm sorry for your loss.
Your grandchild may not be eligible for survivor's benefits if you have not adopted your grandchild.
We have adopted three children from foster care. Two are siblings, their birth mother received SSDI, our other daughter's birth mom receives SSDI as well. My husband was on SSDI when we adopted all three. We have been told that we may be entitled to benefits from the day we adopted to current from their birth moms SSDI?? Also, would all 3 qualify for benefits as their adopted Dad is on SSDI?? We live in NH.

Hi Denise,
Adopted children may be able to claim benefits based on their adoptive parent's SSDI claims. The matter is a bit more complex than that, and as we are not affiliated with the SSA, I would not be able to say that your adopted children would be eligible for certain. I would recommend contacting the SSA about this, they would be more able to give you all the information about this. Their website is www.ssa.gov

My sons father applied just got approved for ssd after filing 3 yrs ago. My sons name was put on the initial application. Will my son receive 3 yrs of back pay?

He might! So long as your son qualified for benefits all of those years, he could be entitled to back pay so long as your husband is also receiving three years of back pay.
My mom has been reciving ssi for my lil sister from my dadin michigan but she has lived with me in fl for 9 months and im paying everything for her is that fraud ??

If you feel your mother is committing fraud, I would contact the SSA with that information, you can report fraud by contacting the SSA, Here's a link to their website:

I just found out my ex-husband has been getting SSI benefits for my children for the past 5 years. We had 50-50 shared custody with each parent having exactly the same amount of time with the kids. Shouldn't part of that money have gone to me since if I understand it correctly it is money to support the child and since they lived in both homes 50 % of the time shouldn't I have been given half. Do I have any recourse or action I can take against my ex-husband.

I'm sorry to say that those benefits are based off of his records, and the SSA generally assigns the parent who applied for auxiliary benefits as the representative payee for the children.
My husband passed away 19 years ago my son has been on survivors benefits since. Now my son has been approved for ssdi due to his autism speach impairment and learning disability since birth. Will he receive back pay for as ssdi since he received survivors?

Hi Maria,
I would not be able to say for sure, but it is doubtful that he would be eligible for back pay for those years. He may be eligible for back pay from the time he applied and the time he was approved, however.
my son is 17 i have raised him. i devorced his father when he was 2. its possible his father is getting SSD how do i find out and do i apply for my son?
My husband has been informed by his medical doctor to apply for short term disability. If he does and he receives this can our child who is under the age of 18 also receive benefits from short term disability if her father is approved? Thank you

Hi Sue,
It would depend if your husband is on SSDI or SSI. If he is on SSI, then he would be able to get auxiliary benefits for your child, if he is SSI, that is not offered with those benefits.
