I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Heidi,
Adoption may not make the child ineligible for benefits, you may want to contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 for some more information regarding adoption and auxiliary benefits.
My son has been receiving ssd from my ex husband for 16 years. My ex husband just got married and now she has filed for spouse's benefits for her and her child witch will be a step child to my ex husband. How can a step child who should get child support from their father take it away from my son who is biological?

Hi Angie,
Biological and step-children both can receive benefits from a parent, the combined benefits for a beneficiary cannot exceed 180% of their benefit amount, however.

Hi Angela,
informally adopted children may qualify for benefits under certain circumstances, however you may need to formalize the adoption if he would be ineligible.

Hi there,
If the child's parents are disabled or deceased, they may qualify for their grandparent's benefit, in certain circumstances. You may want to contact the SSA at www.ssa.gov for some more info.
My daughter receives auxiliary benefits under my ssdi case. If her dad starts paying child support will her social security benefits be cut off?

Hi Zamora,
If you're receiving benefits based off of your work record, then your daughter may be able to keep her benefits if her father starts paying child support.

I'm on Disibility, as well as my daughter. I get a check for her and I the 2nd week of the month. She makes 18 on December 28 th, will I still get a check or will she get a check in her name?

Hi there,
if your child is receiving SSI for her condition, then her benefits may end at 18 unless she re-applies for them. It may be a good idea to contact the SSA and check in to see what kind of benefits she is receiving.

Hi Emily,
Unfortunately, your son's benefits may not include Medicaid, but if you meet your state's guidlines, he may qualify in that way.
