I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Benefits would start after the approval for SSD.

Hi there,

HI, my son has been receiving benefits from his fathers disability for over a year, he won a case in February for back pay for for more years, we haven't heard anything on when that money will be coming in. How long does it normally take to receive if we already get monthly deposits?

Hi Connie,
There's usually a 5 month waiting period until after the approval date.

Hi there,
In that situation, no, as the child may not be eligible for benefits based off of the grandparent if that was the case.

Hi there,
You may want to contact your local SSA office, as family law varies by state and I really could not say if you would be required to report these payments or if they would affect your benefits.
I live in california and im on ssdi my 17 yr old daughter recieves benefits under my case. Her father started making child support payments this yr 250 a month. Will these payments affect our benefits? Do i have to report this to social security?
Tgank you

Hi Lupe,
Her father's child support payments will not affect your or your daughter's SSDI benefits.
Best of Luck
