I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Michelle,
If your child's father is on income-based SSI benefits, your child may not be eligible for benefits as SSI does not offer benefits for dependents.
I have been receiving benefits for my son as a representative payee. His mother has lost her benefits due to ineligibility and her case is under review. She told me that if she is deemed to be eligible, that her children will no longer be eligible. She has two other children and does not have custody of any of them. Is she able to stop her childrens benefits or are they automatically eligible if she is?

Hi Richard,
We are not affiliated with the SSA or the federal government, so I really couldn't say exactly why your situation is the way it is. However, if your child is receiving SSI benefits, they may be changed as the SSA would count the benefits award to the mother as income, and your child's benefit is based on his parent's income.

Hi Amy,
You may need to adopt for the child to be eligible for benefits.
My daughters father was receiving temp disability. He now qualify for Permanent disability. How do I go about seeing if my daughter will receive benefits.

Hi Vanessa,
You can go to your local SSA office or online to the SSA's website to apply for auxiliary benefits on your daughter's behalf.

I have a son whom I have primary physical custody of and the father pays child support. However, it is very little due to the father being unable to work due to permanent military disability. I was told that I could apply for benefits for my child, is this true? I was told not too many people do because not too many people know about it. If so, how do I apply?

Hi Marie,
Your son could qualify for benefits under his father's disability. You can speak to a representative at the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. Or if his father receives his benefits from the VA, you could talk to a representative from there.

Okay, my question is, I've been on disability, ssid for about 4 years now, and I am currently pregnant, I'm due beginning of August. do I apply for benefits for my child? Is it automatic once he's born? I don't know how this works and can't seem to find an answer that explains the process... I have found out that he can qualify for them, but I am not sure how this works, please help me understand

Hi Michele,
If you're receiving SSDI benefits based off of your work record, your child may be eligible for benefits. If you're receiving SSI benefits, then your child would not be eligible for benefits. You may want to contact your local SSA office regarding this, you can find a listing of them here:

Hi Jennifer,
He could get benefits because of his disability, or he could qualify for benefits under your disability.

If a person receives SSI for a child and a sibling turns 18 and begins to work how does that affect the disabled childs check? Is that income counted with the parents? The 18 yr old doesn't pay anything to the parent. Money is going towards car and ins. and college.

Hi there,
The 18 year old's income may not affect his brother if the brother's income is not used by the household and it is not used to support the other child.
I have 2 questions. My daughter receives ssi because her father receives it. She is 11 and he has been out of her life since she was 14 months old. 1. if he screws up and loses his ssi (ends up in jail for more then 3 months or whatever) will she lose her benefits? and 2. ive been wanting to have her last name changed to mine (it's currently his) will that affect her to continue to receive those benefits? (he signed the birth certificate) Thanks

Hi Amy,
If your child's father is incarcerated, your child may still receive benefits while he is ( though his own benefits may not be sent to him). As far as a name change, that may not affect her benefits either, but it may be good to contact the SSA regarding any name change to ensure their information is in order.
