Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi there,
Your child may not be eligible for backpay if they were receiving benefits at the time that your backpay was awarded.

Hi there,
You may want to contact the SSA regarding this, they may be able to re-assign your son's payee to someone that would use those benefits to support your son.

Hi Pam,
If you had listed her in the application, she may automatically be eligible, however it's not a bad idea to contact the SSA to confirm this or add her.

My husband got approved for disability and received his first check of 807.00 in the month of April, we also have a 13 year old daughter. Does anyone know why her check is only 15.00 per month? I know there have been changes, but that amount seems so low...

My children's father is applying for disability. He wants our kids info for his application so they can get benefits. Who will the benefits go to if he files for them? Do I need to file myself? If he owes back child support will that be deducted from his benefits?

Hi Marcia,
Generally, the custodial parent may be assigned payee status for children who receive benefits. Child support may vary by state, so I really could not say if it would be deducted from his benefits.

Hi April,

If his father was on some sort of disability such as SSI or SSDI, he could qualify for survivors' benefits until he is 18.

I've been on dialysis and receiving ssi for 7 yrs and my daughter has never recieved a check. I don't know why she hasn't received anything or who to talk to about this. When I filed before living the hospital I put her on the application and all paper work. Can you point me in the right direction to get answers? Thank you.

Hi Michelle,

I am so sorry to hear that, I would recommend either calling the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or speaking to a disability rights advocate or attorney.

My son is on ssi. His father passed away 2 Years ago. I didn't know that his ssi can convert to ssdi on his fathers record until now. Will he get back pay to two years ago? He also is 18,000 behind on child support. What will happen?

Hi Tammy,
Your child may be eligible for survivor's benefits, however he may not be able to receive back pay for survivor's benefits. As far as child support, I really could not say as laws on child support vary by state.
