Qualifying children

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi there,
If you're receiving benefits based on work record, your child may be eligible for benefits.

My husband have been receiving ssi since 2012 and just found out that our 7 kids may be entitled to getting their own checks. Are the children eligible and what happens when they turn 18 and do I have to reapply each year.

Hi Neecy,
If your husband is receiving benefits based on income rather than work record, your children may not be eligible for benefits. If they were eligible for benefits, their benefits would end at age 16, unless they also have a disability. It may be a good idea to contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

My current boyfriend was just approved for ssdi and ssi. He claims my son as his own but there is no legal documentation that states my son as his. He added my son on his application for benefits and there's a possibility that he could be the father. Will they make him take a DNA test before sending my son a monthly check even though he's already claiming him as his son and even giving him his last name?

Hi Sasha,
As far as I know, there is no verification if a parent is the child's biological father, they generally go by things like the ability to inherit property from the parent. Given that your boyfriend is claiming that the child is his by giving him his last name, your child may be eligible for benefits.

Hi There,

Yes, you can still receive benefits off of your father until you are 18. It doesn't matter if they are separated.

Best of Luck,
Eric

Hi Crystal,
Your daughter would receive benefits based off of her father's benefits, she may also receive back pay in this case.

My husband was diagnosed in 2008 with terminal ALS and he and our three children qualified for Medicaid. He passed away from his disability in 2013 and I was told that my children would receive Medicaid till they turned 21 because of their fathers disabilities. My oldest son turned 19 in June of this year and I received a letter saying he is no longer eligible to receive Medicaid. My income falls between the cracks of Medicaid and I don't make enough to qualify for Obamacare so I don't have insurance and my son is a 19 year old full time student doesn't he still qualify for Medicaid. What I have found on line it appears he does.

Hi Susan,
I'm sorry to hear about that! You may want to contact your local SSA office, they may be able to advise you as to what medical benefits your son would be eligible for. If he's in college, many colleges require students to carry insurance as well, they may also be able to help in that case.

Hi Samantha,
Your child may not be eligible for benefits based off of your disability as you are receiving it from your father's work record.

Hi There,

I am so sorry to hear that. If your son's mother was on SSD or SSI, then he could receive survivor's benefits until he is 18.
