I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?
My disability began in 2009 and 3 years ago i got permanent custody of my niece. Will she receive or can she receive benefits from me?

Hi Jerri,
You would need their written permission to obtain that information from the SSA.

Hi David,
I can't say for sure, but if you qualify for Medicaid yourself, your child could be eligible.

My husband and I have been married for 35 years and he filed for a divorce in 2016 and my children are all grown now. However he never paid any support to them or took care of them. We separated 28 years and he filed for a divorce stating that both parties can not receive any maintenance. I don't want any maintenance for me however I would like to know if my children who are grown now are entitled to any financial support.

Hi There
Unfortunately I can't give a yes or no answer, but if he was on SSI/SSDI then you should contact the SSA on how you should proceed.

If my son dad draws disability can I get my son to draw a check off of his dad? If so how do I go about doing so?
In reply to If my son dad draws by Marie (not verified)
Hi Marie,
Your son may be able to if he is under the age of 18. His father would have to make an appointment with his local SSA office and apply for auxiliary benefits there.
