Hi Steven,

We aren't able to do that because we aren't affiliated with the SSA. You have to schedule an appointment at your local office to do so.

I have been on ssi for a few years now and my payee lives out of state. I would like to get my checks put in my name so i can start being my own payee. Hown do i go about it? And what are the requierments for me to have my checks put into my name?

I recently was found able to handle my own money from Social Security. My grandfather was my representative payee until recently. Social Security recently sent him a letter asking him to send the remaining funds (in form of a check) to my local SSA office. He is going to mail the check to SSA for the remaining money in his possession. My question is, will I receive the money he is sending them? And usually how soon would I receive the money? And how would I receive it (direct deposit, check etc)?

Hi Cody,

Yes, you will since those are now your funds and you will receive it via a direct deposit.

I can't say for sure when you'll get it though, I would speak with someone at your local SSA office about that.

My mother in law was my husband's payee he passed recently I borrowed 4000.00 from my friend to cover funeral and have outstanding debts I am left with. His mom has yet to offer to help with what was saved and not overpaid because I wouldn't give her his remains. Can she keep his benefits if he was entitled to them or can I ask ssa to give me poa so I can take care of his affairs?

Hi Michele,

I would contact the SSA to find out the specifics on this situation. Good luck & I am sorry for your loss.

if you have been appointed to have a payee by a judge originaly .yet after 18 years of disability you feel that you are able to use certain tools to help with managing money .my injurys have worsened over the years .some have remained unchanged issues resulting from injury to my Hypothalumus .memmory.hormonal control body temperature which is all out of wack.seazure like attacks .my ability to use notes my cell phone have helped organise my abilitys to handle money . physical problems hinder me and delay plans but I manage . My payee has helped tremendously to try to help me to become financial dependent .still under my payees control .I would like to be my own payee. my big issue is storys I have heard of disabled people who have tried this getting their benifits stopped . this is my only source of income below the poverty line in the USA .so I am scared I lìve in Costa Rica cost of living is way less than the united states and it is still hard to survive on the amount I get medicare will not cover me here I can't afford a Private doctor and am part of the socialised medical system here. should I be scared or are these storys that do not have merit ????

Hi Alesia,

Sometimes when becoming your own payee the SSA will reopen your case to re-evaluation whether your disability still qualifies for disability benefits. If the SSA finds your condition has significantly improved, they may disqualify you for benefits.
