Social Security Disability

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Hi, a few questions:
1. While collecting SSD, will I be able to apply for Social Security under ex-spose? We were married 32 years and have been divorced for 7.
2. When my ex- spouse retires from his local union, I will, per our divorce agreement, receive 25% of his retirement.

Will any of these scenarios effect my current monthly disability?

Thank you.

HI there,
Neither of those would affect your benefits if you are receiving them based on your work record, however you may be able to receive benefits based off of your spouse's record.

Hi Mary,

Since you are on SSDI, you may be able to. But it is best to double check with the SSA just to be sure.

I received a letter saying that as of Dec 29, 2016 the ssdi office said i was medical disabled. The letter said wait for the next step for the non medical to be determined. How long is the wait until this is approved? It said do not contact the office until you get the second letter. No one can give me any updates on the process. So what is the next step?

HI Bobby,
The SSA may send you a letter establishing that you were eligible or ineligible for benefits based on non-medical criteria ( such as work record or income).

I am receiving ssi and 100% disability from V.A.

I'm eligible for and thinking I will apply for ssdi. If granted, what happens to my ssi?
If the ssdi is more than the ssi...would it just be converted to ssi?

Hi Gerald,
You would Receive your VA disability and SSDI, generally if you're receiving both then you would become ineligible for SSI due to income.

Are January 2018 SSI Checks going to be late for some reason? I always recieve my check on time, but it hasn't been deposited yet.

I receive ssdi from my work record. when i was approved the ssa and my attorney both said if my husband were to become disabled that i would draw half of what he is awarded. both of us are in our 50's, no minor children. I can not find this rule on the ssa site anywhere. Is it true. he is now in process for ssdi.

Hi there,
You would be eligible for benefits based on his work record if what you would receive based on his work record is more than what you would receive on your own work record.
