I had a splenectomy 21 years ago due to primary CMV induced ITP refractory to steroid treatment. I received the preventive vaccines , pneumonia shot, yearly flu shots. Over the past few years I have had sinus infections, eye infections, that last over a month each taking multiple prescriptions to finally clear them. Since april of this year, I have had recurrent sinus infection and severe fatigue and presently have an eye infection that has been going on a month. I just can't stay well. I am an RN on a med/surg floor 13hour night shifts and have missed a lot of work. The work is very high stress I think the immunocompromise from the splenectomy has finally caught up with me. I am 60 years old and thinking of pursuing disability. Thoughts
Hi there,
You may want to apply for disability if your condition leads you to be unable to earn more than $1,170 a month.

Hi Bert,
If you think it will cause you to be able to be out of work for 12+ months then you could be able to qualify for SSD benefits.

Hi Janell,
It varies on a case to case basis, depending on the cost of living where you live, your needs, work credits, household income, etc!

Hi David,
You may qualify! Check the SSA's Blue Book to make sure you meet the listing. You will also need enough work credits or be within the SSA's income limits for SSI.

Hi Timothy,
You can review the SSA's Blue Book to see if you meet the listing for HIV (section 14.11) to see if you qualify. I'd recommend going over the listing with your doctor!
