My truck is falling apart. It's leaking oil and has other issues as well. I want to user my backpay to buy a used vehicle, but I can't sell mine until I have something else to drive. If I buy a car, that will put me over the $2,000 asset limit. But I can't even look for a car if I sell mine first. How do I go about doing this?
Thanks.
Hi there,
You may want to contact the SSA regarding this, they can explain how you would be able to do this while preserving your eligibility for benefits. You can find a listing of local offices here:

Hi Leah,
If you were awarded back pay, you can use the money towards a car!
We own a junker car. 2002 Saturn SL1. It's our only vehicle.
We'd like to buy a newer car, SUV, but don't want to jeopardize my SSID.
In reply to We own a junker car. 2002 by Dave (not verified)
Hi Dave,
The way that you would jeopardize your SSI benefits is if your assets exceed a certain cap. However, one vehicle is generally not counted toward your assets. The best way to make sure would be to contact your local SSA office. The following link explains in a little more detail.

Will social security disability help me purchase a car I'm in need of a vehicle. So that I can get to programs doctors and many other things that will help my life become manegable.

Hi Ivan,
You are able to purchase a car with your SSI funds. A single car generally does not count against your total assets. Just make sure that the purchase is well documented. If you have any other questions, you can always give your local SSA office a call and they can help you with the more specific details.
If i buy a brand new car, will it affect my ssi benefits?
In reply to If i buy a brand new car, by John Doe (not verified)
Hi,
You are able to buy are car while remaining on SSI benefits and it will generally not jeopardize your benefits. Make sure that you keep documentation of all of the transactions. If you are still concerned, I would recommend contacting your local SSA office. If this is your only vehicle, and it is necessary you should be alright.
Would I still reserve SSI and disability if I got married. And has a baby that has cystic fibrosis
In reply to Would I still reserve SSI and by Nathalie (not verified)
Hi Nathalie,
Your SSI may be reduced or stopped if married depending on your spouse's income. If you are receiving SSDI, that will not be affected.
I have a question. My brother is currently on SSI and I want to gift him a car so that he can use to get around to his doctors appointments. Will be gifting a car to him affect his SSI benefits? Is there a limit for the car value? I want to make sure to get him a good reliable car.
In reply to I have a question. My brother by Jackie (not verified)
Hi Jackie,
I have copied in a link from the SSA that describes their definition of a gift and how it will affect benefits.
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0500830520
One of the examples that they use is a car and it looks like it is not counted as income assuming that is his only car. Feel free to call your local SSA office if you would like some more information.
