Hi Kim,

To switch your payee, you will need to make an appointment with your local SSA office. If possible, bring your current payee with you.

I know of someone who has their sister as the payee for her sons. She has to literally beg her for things that her sons need. As far as Lyft rides to their appointments, food, and clothing. What should she do?

Hi Trish,

To switch the payee, they should make an appointment with the local SSA office and If possible have all parties involved attend the meeting. The SSA will also have a response that is more tailored to that specific situation.

Hi Claudia,

I believe you would still be her payee unless she goes in to change it. Your daughter should also make sure her marriage will not impact her SSI. SSI is based on household income, so once married her spouse's income will be taken into consideration. If it is over the income limit, her benefits may be reduced or stopped.

My 17 year old sons receives ssi and his mom is his payee. He ran away the end of June and has been at our house refusing to go back home. We have filed for change of custody so we can have primary, but this won’t be completed until earliest end of August. Today he asked her if he could come get some clothes and she said no. He asked her if he could have $100 of his ssi money to go buy some clothes and she said no. He wants to call the SSA and ask for a new representative payee. Can he do this if she still legally has custody? She seems to not want to use any of it on him.

Hi,

To change your representative payee, contact your local SSA office. They should be able to help especially if you are able to show that the child is not receiving any of the money.

Hi Jimmy,

I would recommend calling ahead to your local SSA office to make an appointment to speak with a representative from there. You can only make any changes to your payee situation in person.

Hi Rachel,

If you are trying to change your payee, you can do so by going to an SSA office. They can appoint one for you if needed. If you'd like to switch to someone you know, have that person go with you to the SSA office and have their Social Security card and a valid picture ID. Be sure to make an appointment before you go!

Hi Jay,

Payee changes are made at your local SSA office. I recommend calling and setting up an appointment. While you are on the phone, ask what you should bring to the meeting. Generally it is helpful to have all parties present at the meeting.

Hi Tammy,

If you visit an SSA office with your step son you can change his payee. Whoever will be his new payee should also go and have their Social Security card and a picture ID with them. Be sure to make an appointment ahead of time before you go!
