I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Carla,
I'm sorry for your loss. Generally, if your son is receiving benefits, it would take four months from the time he starts receiving benefits to get the back pay. Regarding how long it would take to find the other child, I'm not entirely sure as to how long that would take.
Hi-my husband passed away in 2011 both of my children get benefits .. My daughter just turn 19 and finish high school . I received a letter from ss stoping her benefits. Is that mean that my other child (15) will get more money ? The part that was going to her sister ? Thank you

Hi Monica,
I am sorry for your loss. Your other child may still receive the same amount as they would have if your other child was still eligible.

My husband receives ssdi and i get auxillary benefits for my son and myself. Also his son from his first marriage gets payments. The ex-girlfriend -they were never married- has full custody of his daughter and also is receiving payments. She informed us that she is getting married soon and she wants her husband to adopt the child. If the child is adopted by this man will the child still receive the auxiliary payments from his ssdi?

Hi Amber,
Your husband's child may still be eligible, but it would depend on if your husband would still be considered their parent for the purpose of SSDI disability benefits.

So, my mother recently passed away in April. My little brother , has no legal Guardian as of right now. I am currently trying to obtained custody. My brother received ssi for a disability , however when my mom passed the payments stopped. Will I still be able to file ssi for him , and become his new payee without having custody?

Hi there,
if you're receving SSDI, you may be able to have auxiliary benefits for your children, you would have to contact the SSA to apply, you can call them at 1-800-772-1213

Hi there,
I am sorry for your loss. We are not affiliated with the SSA, so I would not be able to say exactly why they reduced her benefit amount. However, SSI is based on income and resources, and they may have re-calculated it based on the income and resources of the child's guardian(s).
I applied for Sid in 2007,in 2007 my two children were added to my sis claim,I've been going to hearing since 2009.My two children have pass the limit for sis, will they get auxiliary payments for waiting and do they have to be disabled
In reply to I applied for Sid in 2007,in by lonette pinckney (not verified)
Hi Lonette,
I'm not sure if they would be eligible for back pay, but a dependent or spouse would not need to be disabled to be eligible for auxiliary benefits.
