My truck is falling apart. It's leaking oil and has other issues as well. I want to user my backpay to buy a used vehicle, but I can't sell mine until I have something else to drive. If I buy a car, that will put me over the $2,000 asset limit. But I can't even look for a car if I sell mine first. How do I go about doing this?
Thanks.

Hi Kimberly,
The SSA generally looks at the practicality of the car and not necessarily the year. If the car is practical for your transportation needs, it will most likely not be considered an asset. If you are concerned, you can always contact your local SSA office.
How to purchase a car while on SSI stipulations rules?????

Hi,
The SSA generally does not consider your primary vehicle to be an asset assuming that it is practical for your needs.
