I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?
Do I need to have a child support order for my son that I applied for disabily benefits for if his Father does Not live with us?

Hi Danelle,
It may be a good idea to have one for your application if the SSA factors it i to applications for benefits.
My husband just received the approval letter for disability. The letter mentioned our child, by name, may be eligible for benefits. She is a foster child we will be adopting in November. She has lived with us since December 2015. Do we apply for her benefits now or after the adoption is final?

Hi there,
If the SSA sent you a letter saying she was eligible, it may be a good idea to contact an SSA representative at your local office for more information, just in case. You can find a listing of offices here:

Hi Timothy,
your child may be eligible for back pay, it may be a good idea to check in with the SSA to confirm if she is eligible.
I recently won custody of my daughter and in the court order it states that my ex wifes disability claim for our daughter now goes to our address. Does this happen automatically or is there something I need to do to ensure the money is delivered to the appropriate place?

hi John,
It may be a good idea to contact the SSA and make sure that you are listed as the representative payee for your daughter's benefits. You can call them at 1-800-772-1213.

she is not disabled it is her marriage her husband is not the child father and its causing friction.

Hi Tony,
Unfortunately, you may need to legally adopt the child for them to be eligible for benefits.
I just adopted a child&i am on ssi.will my child qualify for any benefits from my ssi?

Hi Felicia,
Unfortunately your child may only qualify for SSI benefits if they are considered disabled by the SSA.
Hi. My husband and I have received temporary custody of our nephew through Dhr. We are waiting on a court date for temporary custody. Both of his parents are on disability and ordered to pay child support which we do not recieve. Can we apply for him to receive benefits from his parents even though we have temporary custody?

Hi Amy,
if they are receiving SSDI benefits rather than SSI, then your nephew may qualify for benefits on either of their work histories. I would contact the SSA, he may already be receiving benefits through them and they can change the payee to either you or your husband.
Hey my son was receiving ssi for about 5 yrs back in Nov 2015 they stopped his ssi stating he was no longer disabled I never appealed it then i reapplied april2016 and he was re approved August 2016 will they go back to when they stopped it or will it start when I reapplied please help

Hi Ebony,
They may reinstate his back benefits if the SSA decides they had cancelled his SSI erroneously.
My ex-husband has been approved for disability. We have a hearing to amend child support due to this. What should I expect? I received part of his back check for the child support he owes but he owes a lot more.
He is telling me that our son has not gotten any support from his claim because we only have joint physical, not legal custody. Is this true? What do I need to do to start claim for my son or will it be handled through the child support hearing? My understanding is that they are separate legal issues.

Hi Amanada,
Your son may be eligible for benefits, regardless of custody. To apply, you should contact the SSA at www.ssa.gov or call them at 1-800-772-1213
