I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?

Hi Deb,
Your grandson may still be able to receive survivor's benefits based on his parent's work history after adoption.

Hi there,
You may be able to get disability benefits for the child if the parents are deceased or disabled themselves or if you adopted your grandchild.

Hi Angela,
I'm very sorry to hear about your Aunt.
Your cousin may be able to if you had adopted him, but they may only be eligible for their survivor's benefits at that point.
I was awarded back pay from my social security disability and also i had some back child support because i went down hill fast.
The mother recieved have of my back pay and my childs back pay. Which is way way over the amount i owe her. Its not really for the mother it for the mother to take care of the child. But we all know how that goes.
If a man become disabled or miss one parent they treat him like ****. No if the parents are together and something bad happenes to the mother or the father does it effect the hole family and they work there way there it as best as they can.. i dont understand because there are good fathers out there.

Hi Terry,
I'm sorry to hear about that! Generally, each state handles child support differently, so It may be that the state you're in in more punitive toward fathers paying child support that others.

My bid went to live with their father for 17 months and he was only able to get one check. Will there be a back pay check when they come back to live with me
In reply to My bid went to live with by Anonymous (not verified)
Hi there,
I'm not really sure in your case, but generally back pay is sent about four months after being approved for benefits. It may be a good idea to confirm that this person is still otherwise eligible for disability benefits.

Hi there,
I'm sorry to hear about that! Unfortunately, you or your granddaughter may not be eligible for benefits based off his work record as you were not legally married to him.
