What Does an Advocate Actually Do?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I have severe PTSD and related anxiety issues, and there are certain things I can't do. Obviously, since that's literally what disability means.

Typically I end up crying and stuttering incoherently on the phone, usually ending in a panic attack. Going to the doctor is a guaranteed panic attack, probable dissociation, and possible violent lashing out and running away.
So... the two main things that they rely on to make a decision are two things that I can't do by myself...

What I need is someone who can make calls for me and go to the doctor with me - if it's necessary for me to go to a physical exam.
Are these things that an advocate might do? Or is there something/someone else I should be looking for?

Hi there,
An advocate may be able to connect you with resources to help you, however they may not go to the doctor or make calls for you.
