I was just approved for SSI and have been told I'll only receive $486 a month. Does this include my backpay? SSA has questions about how I have been paying utilities. I have been selling everything I own on Craigslist and Ebay just to try and keep the lights on. They want receipts for everything. I have my Paypal receipts from Ebay, but nothing from Craigslist, as those were cash transactions. Should I try and provide SSA with the receipts I have, or just suck it up and accept the reduced backpay? Will providing receipts hurt me in any way?
Thanks.
Hi there,
That does not include your back pay as that is monthly benefits for the time that you were eligible for benefits, but did not receive them. You may want to provide them with as much documentation about what you had sold as possible as it will help prove your income.
Hi,
Can SSA legally deem income of a boyfriend or Fiancee if I had the agreement to pay rent even though I had no income while awaiting approval. The agreement was to pay rent when I became able.

Hi Shirley,
A boyfriend's income will likely not affect you unless he's giving you large sums of spending money! A husband's income will definitely affect your eligibility though.
I lived with my adult daughter for most of the back pay years, and they're going to calculate the rent and utilities she paid and deduct half of it from my back pay. >:(

Hi Karen,
I'm sorry to hear about that! If you receive benefits based on resources and income, your benefits may be adjusted due to in-kind support such as housing.
