My son is almost 2 years old and he will be getting backpay in a few weeks. I wanted to know would buying a car be acceptable. I work, I'm also in nursing school and it's almost next to impossible to get everything done for him with only one vehicle that me and my husband share. We have ran into so many issues with him missing appointments and other things due to only having one vehicle. Also we have 4 other kids which makes it even more difficult. I just wanted to know if getting a second car would meet the requirements of spending this money on something that benefits my son.
Hi there,
While you may be able to buy a car using back pay, there may be limits to doing so. It may be a good idea to contact a local SSA office. You can find a listing of them here:

How long after being approved and being payee over your child does it take to get it

Hi Samantha,
That's a great question! Unfortunately it'll depend on how quickly your local office processes the paperwork. SSI payments usually begin in under a month, so it shouldn't be a long wait.

Hi There,
You may be able to but you should double check with the SSA first.
