Where can my blind friend find help for SSI paperwork?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Recently, my totally blind friend was given notice that several thousand dollars of his SSI payments had been sent to him in error because his resources (some sort of insurance stock) had bumped up ever so slightly above the $2000 limit. He will have his payments reduced by ten percent until this money is paid back.

He called the number on his notification letter and was told that he could appeal if he wanted. My question is, where can he find someone in the Western New York area that can guide him through a process like this?

Spouses wages reducing my SSI amount

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

My wife works part-time average gross 1,185 monthly. My SSI amount changes drastically twice a year when she has 3 pays in a month. She does not receive SSI. Twice I received under 300 normally it's about 500 everything is going up but I didn't get notification of a cost of living increase in my benefit like the other people receiving SSI. Is this because I'm married and she is employed?

Effect of gift money toward buying home on SSI

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Under SSI, our current income limit is no more $3000 to continue receiving benefits for a special needs child. Recently we are planning the purchase of a home under FDA mortgage. With the help of family members offing gift money, we will show close to $7000 for a month or two before closing.

Question: will we lose SSI payment for those months over the imposed $3000 limit.

How does State SSI Supplement Work?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Our 19 year old permanently disabled son just received his first SSI payment. He lives with us (parents and our other son). His federal payment was reduced by ⅓ because we are paying his living expenses. In addition he received a CA State supplement.
Questions….
1. If he starts paying his share of living expenses which exceed Federal SSI, but are less than Federal SSI plus CA State SSI will his payment be reduced by ⅓? How does the State Supplement figure in to the equation?
