I have children and their father has recently went for a hearing is waiting on a decision. I was told that the kids will qualify for benefits. I have several questions.
How is the amount determined?
What are the rules for the cutoff age to recieve benefits?
Do the children recieve back pay as well?
What steps if any do I need to take to set up their case?
If a child is 18 but still in high school do they qualify, and for how long?
My 14 yr is deemed DC but he is only qualify for $255. Now hes sicker and my income is way less what should i do

Hi there,
I would contact the SSA, they can adjust his benefit amount due to your income.
My Ex filed for SSDI for herself and SSI for my son, and was awarded for both plus back pay. However, we have shared custody, and I claim him on my taxes since I pay all of his major expenses (health insurance, medical bills, vehicle, vehicle insurance). Will this affect me claiming him as a dependent on my tax return? She is saying she has to claim him as a dependent.

Hi Steve,
Tax law regarding claiming someone as a dependent may vary by state, and unfortunately I could not really say as we do not specialize in tax law.

Hi Steve,
I really could not say, but any income your child receives from those benefits may not be considered income for you.
Another question...if my son is getting SSI filed under my ex wife, who gets SSDI, will this affect grants or financial aid for college for my son? He is my dependent for tax purposes

Hi Steve,
It may not affect him as he may not be eligible after the age of 16 for benefits based on your ex wife's work record.

Hi Bobby,
if both of the child's biological parents are deceased or if you had adopted them, they may be eligible for benefits.

i am in the process of waiting on a hearing to determine if i qualify for ssdi when i filed for it my daughter was 16 she is now 18 and still in high school if iam approved will she get any backpay or benifits ?

Hi Michelle,
She may be eligible for back pay for any time that she was qualified to receive benefits. However, since she is over 16, she may not be eligible for benefits based off of your work history.
My ex-husband started receiving social Security disability while we were married after our divorce he started receiving auxiliary benefits for our child. He pays me $300 a month in child support because he gets $6000 a month and I am currently in the process of my disability claim so I am not working at the time so I have no other income . my question is, am I entitled to Half of our child's auxiliary benefits as well we live in Michigan .

Hi Jasmine,
I really could not say as this would be an issue relating to family law, and I do not have any expertise in the field.
My husband and I both receive social security disability. Each on our own work record. Our son and daughter in law where both incarcerated over a year ago and we obtain permanent guardianship of our 2 grand daughters. However due to the length of their sentence we are proceeding with adopting. My question once adopted can one draw off of each of us or will they both have to draw off of one of us?

Hi Dee,
They would be able to draw off of one of you, rather than both.
If my son will turn 18 this month and is on ssid does my income still count against him he will graduate when he's 19

Hi there,
After age 18, your child may have to re-apply based on his own income and resources.
My son's father died when he was 4 years old he is 8 now and I'd like to collect his survivors benefits but his sister already collects $600/month I was told I will get half that a month and back pay. Where does the back pay come from.
In reply to My son's father died by Ashleigh (not verified)
Hi Ashleigh,
I'm not really sure where the back pay would come from, as survivor's benefits would be paid from the time you apply, rather than starting when your spouse had died.
